Code Lightfall is a shy young Cherokee boy. At school, he keeps his head down and tries to avoid the taunts of bullies. Rather than standing up for himself, Code prefers to concentrate on doodling robot designs. He also misses his beloved grandfather, who disappeared on a visit to Mek Mound, the hilly site of an ancient, Native American civilization.
On a field-trip to Mek Mound, Code wanders off from his classmates only to stumble through a portal into Mekhos, a bizarre land populated entirely by robots. Mekhos is an exciting and dangerous place, and potentially holds the answer to Code’s grandfather’s disappearance. Code’s adventures step into high gear when an “atomic slaughterbot” of his own design comes to life at a Mekhos fabrication plant. Together with his very own giant ‘bot, Code sets off to participate in a robot uprising to face down a rapacious ruler who threatens the very existence of Earth and of Mekhos.
Author Daniel H. Wilson – a real-life, PhD-toting roboticist – infuses this exciting tale with many scientifically-authentic details and brings it to a truly dramatic conclusion. Dan Ackroyd does a gripping reading. Great book for beginner sci-fi lovers.
