I’m madly in nerd-love, and want you to be too, dear readers. And the object of my affection? hoopla.
hoopla is a media service used by over 1,200 public libraries across North America. It allows you as a library member to borrow audiobooks, ebooks, music, movies, and TV shows on your mobile devices and computers for free. No fees, no lines, no waiting for some bookish resource you crave to be returned by a fellow library patron! Just instant streaming or downloads from what seems like a rapidly growing stock of great stuff. Please give it a try – it’s awesome.
Here are the steps to access hoopla:
- Use this map to find out if your local public library offers hoopla
- If yes, then install the hoopla app on your mobile device (smartphone, iPad etc.) or visit hoopla.com on your computer
- Register your account by entering an email ID and creating a password.
- Next, choose your library from a dropdown menu and use your regular library ID and PIN to log in (some libraries may not require a PIN – check with your local library if you get stuck).
That’s it. You’re off to the bookish races. From your new hoopla account, search for ebooks, movies, and the many, many audiobooks that I will be recommending on this site! Stream your choices, or download them for offline viewing and listening, e.g. before a road trip. (Of course data charges etc. might apply, please check according to your mobile data service.) Extra tip: Use the “heart” symbol to mark favorites and create your own line-up. Enjoy!
Each library sets its own monthly limit for hoopla rentals. As a member of two local libraries, I can borrow 5 items through one, but many more through the other…glad I poked around.
Have you given hoopla a try? What do you think? Do you know of other free media services like this one? Do drop Read, Kids, Read! a note!
